The opportunity
The Solicitor Level-2 is responsible for providing effective and efficient in-house legal advisory services and advocacy for the Commissioner of State Revenue in matters arising from Acts administered by the State Revenue Office.

Reporting to the Team Leader, you will be responsible for:

  • Appearing as an advocate for the Commissioner in proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria, Magistrates' Court of Victoria and the Federal Court of Australia, as required.
  • Managing revenue recovery cases, including negotiating with taxpayers and their representatives at a senior commercial level. Undertaking recovery action for a portfolio of debt or a specific debt project.
  • Assisting the Senior Solicitor and Solicitor Level 3 in assessing claims for voidable transactions under the Corporations Act 2001.
  • Advising branch staff in legal aspects of debt recovery and on the development of recovery policies and changes in the law affecting debt recovery procedures.
  • Undertake appropriate administrative actions and maintaining accurate customer records.

Who we are looking for
To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A minimum of 1-3 years' experience as a lawyer in the public or private sector dealing in commercial and insolvency law, as well as demonstrated knowledge Victorian and Federal Civil Procedure.
  • An appropriate legal qualification, including admission as an Australian Lawyer and Australian legal practitioner within the meaning of the Legal Profession Act 2004.
  • Entered on the High Court Register of Practitioners.
  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, a current Australian practising certificate granted in Victoria which authorises the holder to engage in legal practice as a government legal practitioner (within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014).
  • High level interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with stakeholders along with high level written skills to draft legal documentation, advice, correspondence, and internal memoranda.
  • Sound negotiation, decision making and problem-solving skills.
