About the Team

Within our Corporate and Commercial team sit our regulatory and advisory specialists. Their areas include Technology, Data and Privacy, Competition and Consumer, and associated regulated areas. The team works with clients in both the private and public sectors, and they are seeking a senior lawyer at the senior associate or special counsel level with a minimum of 4-6PAE to join the team.

About the Role

The role is based in Sydney reporting to partner-level lawyers in Sydney and Brisbane. The work on offer is wide-ranging within the advisory/regulatory sphere and includes working with clients on commercial contracts and other arrangements, regulator enquiries/ investigations, and assisting with policies, procedures, and other issues. The advisory component requires up-to-date knowledge and familiarity with Privacy, and Australian Competition and Consumer Law as well as a general background in the Corporations Law.

Privacy-specific work includes PIAs, policies, and procedures and assisting with breach preparation and management. There is also a component of general commercial work related to data and technology.

The Competition and Consumer law work includes:

  • ACCC Investigations;
    into breaches of the restrictive trade practice provisions including preparing responses to section 155 notices and submissions to the ACCC.
  • Competition compliance advice to both public and private sector clients
  • ACCC authorisations, notifications, and merger clearances
  • Other ACCC regulatory activity and interactions with regulators on both competition and consumer law matters
  • Consumer law advisory including for misleading or deceptive conduct, unfair contract terms, and product liability (including product recalls)

The client portfolio of the group includes those in both the Private and public sectors.

About You
You will possess detailed knowledge and experience in Competition and Consumer Law and also data and privacy law. Experience in technology and general commercial contracting and transactions would be useful.

While experience working with government clients would be advantageous this is not a prerequisite.

You will ideally possess:

  • a commercial, client-centric approach.
  • an interest in business and the business of the clients with whom you work.
  • a sound knowledge of Competition and Consumer Law and data and privacy laws as well as general corporate and commercial law experience.
  • excellent drafting, analytical, problem-solving, and inter-personal skills.
  • high level of attention to detail.
  • a sense of personal responsibility for your work.
