Principal Data Engineer

The Data Platforms team at OnePass designs, builds and runs key capabilities accelerating the data strategy for OnePass at OneDigital. The team is responsible for establishing data platform capability, to be adopted by other internal teams, supporting the creation of data products, solving a range of business needs.

We embed progressive data management standards and engineering best practices into platform capabilities, resulting in reliable, efficient, governed and scalable handling of data. The team is composed of data engineering and analytics engineering professionals and we are on the lookout for individuals passionate about transforming data into valuable and loved data products.

What you'll be doing

In this role you will be responsible for driving improvements in data platform engineering and architecture, as well as designing and building data products used by and co-created with cross functional teams focused on customer outcomes.

You will lead the evolution of our data platform and will need continuous improvement as data and analytics use cases grow. This will involve closely working with other internal specialised teams such as analytics &
insights, platform engineering, security, data governance, privacy and customer trust.

You'll be collaborating with business teams solving problems involving data, analytics, AI/ML - and solutioning to deliver business outcomes through supporting the surfacing of customer insights, and enabling data-driven action. Consumers of data platform enablement include data analysts, data scientists and product owners - and will grow in line with our data strategy and principles of decentralisation.

• Applying your functional expertise to test the viability of the strategy, policies and processes and to provide insights to inform and determine key decisions, along with the rest of the team and the Head of Engineering and Data Platforms on the development of data platforms and data product ecosystem
• Manage balance between team workloads and delivery expectations
• Motivates others through articulating a compelling vision and strategy, helps teams understand how their contributions make a positive difference and support customer missions
• Eliminate blockers both internal and external to the team to help meet their goals
• Be responsible for the team's wellbeing and engagement including career sponsorship
• Be the multiplying force to accelerate and enable our data ecosystem
• Build road maps for data products and data platforms, including non-functional requirements e.G. data quality, platform security and cost
• Build and drive data engineering and analytics engineering practices and standards
• Influence strategy development in key areas including personalisation, data strategy and generative AI
• Partner with teams heavily reliant on data for analytics and insight generation including providing data technologies, solutions and data assets required for advanced analytics
• Partner with relevant teams improving data literacy, encouragement of a self-service and data-focused culture, and cross-skilling of other roles in alignment with the data strategy
• Collaborate to deliver data governance solutions that ensure secure access to data, automated monitoring of data quality and documentation to enable efficient use of data
• Influence data security and data privacy policies to align with data strategy, and lead implementation of effective and efficient platform-level controls
• Drive the development and implementation of data best practices to improve delivery of the data platform and data products
• Help to create business value through the production, consumption of data products, actionable insights and development of data-intensive digital applications
• Actively participate in hiring and foster culture of trust and collaboration to build high-performing cross-functional team

What you'll bring to the table

• Demonstrated experience designing and building platforms aligned to the Organisational visions
• Extensive experience delivering a modern data platform for a data-led organisation, with working knowledge of the design and delivery of a data ecosystem that includes a data lake, data warehouse, reporting data layers, data marts and feature stores
• Curious, innovative thinking, and ability to translate ideas into practical solutions
• Hands-on experience building production data pipelines
• Programming experience. Proficiency in Python and interest in learning other languages as selected by the engineering teams (e.G. Go)
• Experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code and willingness to upskill
• Expertise in data modelling (e.G. dbt)
• Working knowledge of querying tools, such as SQL
• Experience having led, mentored or developed an engineering team
• Active listening skills and empathy towards your team members
• Ability to effectively communicate concerns when things don't feel "
  Right"
  
• Aptness to work with change and uncertainty addressing team's concerns as needed
• Demonstrated success working with agile and Lean methodologies

It's a bonus, but not mandatory, if you have:

• Analytics or business intelligence experience (2+ years)
• Marketing and product-led personalisation experience (2+ years)
• 8+ years technology experience in data engineering or related roles
• 2+ years exposure in a large complex data environment
• Working knowledge around machine learning, MLOps, natural language processing, information retrieval, search or generative AI
