THE ROLE:

The Director, Policy and Strategy, manages the Ministerial, Policy &
Strategy team, tasked with guiding strategic planning and alignment for government investment in Simplified Trade System (STS) reforms. Reporting to the Head of the STS Unit, this role plays a crucial part in connecting STS reforms to whole-of-government priorities and supporting coordinated and evidence-based reforms to cross-border trade regulations and digital systems.

The Director, Policy and Strategy, will lead a team dedicated to setting the STS Unit's strategic vision, prioritising and planning necessary reforms to realise this vision, and ensuring alignment across the STS Unit and partner agencies. Key responsibilities include analysing and advising on STS reform investment proposals (including business cases), overseeing ministerial governance and Cabinet processes, and engaging with APS stakeholders and communications. The STS reforms rely on strong and collaborative relationships across government agencies and this role will build and maintain a partnership approach.

Additionally, this role will advise on the priority of potential reforms and investments in line with strategic goals and will facilitate regular engagement with businesses.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

- Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team (APS and contractors), fostering an inclusive, innovative and high-performing team. This involves leading by example, mentoring emerging leaders and ensuring that the team is motivated, skilled and well-equipped to meet the forward challenges.
- Leading ongoing review, strategic alignment and prioritisation of investment proposals to ensure they meet the STS reform objectives, engaging with a wide range of government and business stakeholders to ensure cohesive planning and prioritisation.
- Applying critical analysis and strategic insight to advice for Ministers and senior executive aimed at driving forward the STS reform initiatives and securing necessary investments.
- Collaborating with wider government departments, to streamline governance processes and enhance the coordination of Whole of Government advice and communication strategies, ensuring they align with the STS strategic vision.
- Managing fit-for-purpose engagement with state and territory governments and international partners.
- Leading stakeholder engagement for the STS Unit and development of consistent and engaging key messages for business.
