The Cloud Data Lead is responsible for driving our cloud database initiatives forward. This role is pivotal in crafting, implementing, and optimizing our cloud-based database solutions to meet our organization's evolving needs. The ideal candidate will spearhead the adoption of modern database technologies, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance in our cloud environment.
About the role
People Management:
Lead and manage a team of DBAs, providing guidance, coaching, and mentorship to ensure high performance and professional development
Set clear objectives and expectations for the team, providing regular feedback and guidance
Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability within the data team, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous learning
Operations:
Work closely with Technology teams to deliver effective cloud-based data solutions aligned with business requirements and industry best practices
Oversee the implementation and deployment of cloud database solutions, ensuring proper provisioning, configuration, and optimization
Monitor and optimize database performance, ensuring scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness within the data team
Provide technical expertise and leadership in troubleshooting and resolving complex database issues and performance bottlenecks
Implement robust security measures and disaster recovery solutions to safeguard data and ensure business continuity
Collaborate with stakeholders to define and prioritize data-related projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives
Develop and enforce data governance policies and procedures to ensure data quality, consistency, and compliance
Develop and implement best practices for data management, security, and governance in a cloud environment
Implement automation and monitoring tools to proactively identify and address performance bottlenecks and resource utilization issues
Optimize database performance and resource utilization to minimize costs while maintaining optimal performance
Implement cost-saving strategies and monitor database-related expenses to ensure alignment with budgetary constraints
Collaborate with finance and procurement teams to manage vendor relationships and negotiate favourable pricing and terms
About you
Bachelor's degree in IT, Business (or other relevant field) and/or relevant experience
Framework certifications - ITIL, PRINCE2, COBIT, TOGAF or similar highly desirable
Minimum of 10 years of experience in databases and cloud data technologies, with a strong focus on Microsoft SQL Database on IaaS and Azure PaaS data services
Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing people and teams, with demonstrated leadership skills and a track record of building high-performing teams
Expertise in designing, implementing, and optimizing cloud-based data solutions, including database migration, performance tuning, and scalability
In-depth knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, including database administration, query optimization, and troubleshooting
Experience with Azure data services such as Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Cosmos DB
Strong understanding of cloud architecture principles, including security, scalability, and resilience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Proven ability to drive innovation and change, with a results-oriented mindset and a focus on continuous improvement
Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified:
Azure Database Administrator Associate or similar credentials are a plus
Proven track record and substantial experience in driving cloud adoption, standardisation of cloud services, automation of infrastructure, modern operating models
Experience liaising with Cloud vendors to drive outcomes for customers
Exhibit excellent analytical skills, the ability to manage multiple projects under strict timelines, as well as the ability to work well in a demanding, dynamic environment and meet overall objectives
