Senior Solicitor, Legislation

The Role

The Senior Solicitor is responsible for working with departmental stakeholders to develop and manage a range of legislative and regulatory projects, including Bills, regulations and instruments. The Senior Solicitor role sits within the Legislation Team in the Public and Administrative Law Unit within the Legal and Legislation Branch, and will report to the Managing Principal Solicitor, Legislation.

The responsibilities of the Senior Solicitor, Legislation will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide authoritative advice on complex legal, legislative, regulatory and policy issues and proposals under limited supervision.
  • Lead or support the development of bills and regulations under limited supervision. Draft, review and advise on a range of legal and legislative documentation, including instruments, agreements, Cabinet submissions and explanatory memorandums, dealing with complex issues, including development of precedents.
  • Advise departmental and agency staff on processes and requirements for primary and subordinate legislation.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with colleagues in the Legislation Team, the Legal Branch, program areas across the Department and with external lawyers.

The Team

The position of Senior Solicitor, Legislation forms a part of the Legal and Legislation Branch. The Legal and Legislation Branch is the centralised provider of legal services to the Department. It supports the Department's strategic priorities by partnering with our client areas and delivering quality legal advice, dispute management, legislation development and commercial legal services.

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • Significant experience in developing primary and subordinate legislation, and detailed knowledge and understanding of legislative processes, including Cabinet, Executive Council and Parliamentary processes and requirements. and.
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience in the principles and practice of administrative and constitutional law with strong statutory interpretation skills.
  • High level research, conceptual and analytical skills and proven ability to develop recommendations on complex legal, legislative and policy issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional and collaborative working relationships across the Department.
