Regulation Policy, Risk and Insurance Policy team

Within the Regulation Group, the Regulation Policy, Risk and Insurance Policy team provides advice on regulatory policy across all sectors of the economy, including building, consumer protection, energy and transport. The team develops and maintains policy frameworks relating to provision of insurance by the government insurer and the management of risk by government departments. It advises the government on risks of state significance and plays a role in risk and insurance policy in the context of natural disasters.

About the role

The position reports to the Director, Regulation Policy, Risk and Insurance within the Regulation Group.

This position will play a leadership role in the delivery of high quality advice to government across fields including regulation policy and regulator governance, risk and insurance policy. It supports and contributes to a team that provides evidence based policy development and responses to issues impacting government and the community, and strategic advice relating to the State's regulators and the State's insurer.

Knowledge of domestic building policy and/or building insurance would be desirable.

As a senior member of the Regulation Group, the role will contribute to fostering a positive team culture, and mentor and support team members.

The key accountabilities of this role are to:

  • Work both independently and collaboratively in the team to deliver:
    • practical advice on economic/regulatory and policy issues for senior management and government
    • analysis of qualitative and quantitative data sets
    • research on complex economic, financial and/or public policy issues.
  • Deliver briefings and policy advice that are timely, accurate, accessible and fit-for-purpose
  • Communicate with, negotiate and influence, internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to fostering a positive team culture.

About you

We are seeking applications from candidates with demonstrable experience in:

Influence:

  • experience preparing high quality verbal and written briefings and advice, including the ability to convey complex issues persuasively and effectively in plain language
  • experience in building relationships and working with internal and external stakeholders to negotiate and persuade to achieve results.

Conceptual and problem-solving skills:

  • demonstrated capacity to solve complex and ambiguous problems
  • experience in using economic frameworks and principles, and/or experience in policy development and advice.

Analytical skills:

  • an eye for detail and ability to interpret and synthesise information, including using data to understand an issue.
  • experience working within a team and supporting others to pursue common goals
  • experience in providing timely and fit for purpose advice and products as part of a team
  • managing the work of junior team members as needed.

Experience and qualifications

Tertiary qualifications in economics, public policy, law or another relevant field are required.
