The Principal System Engineer will own, and drive systems features, work packages and designs to ensure high quality products and systems are delivered on time to our customers. Be a leader of change by identifying and championing improvements in Cochlear's engineering processes and design tools. Lead a team of electrical and firmware engineers as a people manager to develop capability and effective delivery of projects. The scope is primarily within the corporate office;
however, this role willalso interact and serve with external companies as customers supported by Incubation Operations in design of medical devices.

Incubation Operations is a brand-new department that Cochlear recently established within our Advanced Innovation Group. It's purpose is to support strategic start-ups and research partners by working together on design, prototyping, and manufacturing while utilizing our cutting-edge knowledge and technology that has been developed over the past 40 years. This team is currently partnering with Epi-minder Pty Ltd, to develop and commercialise the world first ultra - long term epilepsy monitoring solution, called the Mindersystem.

The Opportunity

A full-time Principal System Engineer position is available at Cochlear, with the position based in our Macquarie Park, Sydney headquarters. Using best practices for systems engineering, the appointed Principal System Engineer will design, develop, and implement new products and systems.

In addition to providing technical expertise and thought leadership, you will oversee a small team of engineers with expertise in firmware, test systems, and electrical engineering. You will work with various R&
D teams to cultivate an innovative and creative culture.

Acting as the technical authority for systems engineering definition and realization, your overarching goal will be to contribute to the vision and direction of the innovation Incubator, delivering/sharing best practice, innovative solutions and contributing to the architectural roadmap for future Cochlear portfolio.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead systems engineering activities on more complex and business critical product development product projects or system projects.
  • Partner with product/system project manager and work closely with cross functional teams to ensure delivery of quality products meeting business objectives and user needs.
  • Provide leadership and structure to the feature team / work package to ensure delivery of features.
  • Find solutions to difficult problems outside the standard solutions by making decisions in the face of ambiguity to move a technical domain forward.
  • Provide technical support in dealing with CAPAs and other design issues to other teams within R&
    D and more broadly within Cochlear organisation.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of design methodologies and technological innovations in the Systems Engineering field.
  • Help strengthen Cochlear's patent portfolio through the contribution of patent disclosures.
  • Identify and rectify any quality issues in processes or manufacturing.
  • Responsible for agreeing, through influencing of key decision makers, service contracts with customers/suppliers/third parties.

Essential:

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively (and adjust communication style as needed) with cross-functional teams at various levels.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of systems engineering principles, methods and tools that are appropriate for the development of medical devices.
  • Demonstrated experience in independently delivering work packages to meet milestones.
  • Proven experience working in team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully coordinating the work of engineers to deliver work packages.
  • Demonstrated experience in influencing senior stakeholders to arrive at decisions and deliver project outcomes.
  • Engineering/Science degree (Electrical, Software, Mechanical, Biomedical or Systems engineering preferred).

Desired:

  • Excellent knowledge of Systems engineering and architecture principles and applications.
  • Experience in implant development or in the highly regulated industry, e.G., medical devices.
  • Experience working in Agile product development.
