Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is an integrated transport infrastructure and precincts planning project that will deliver a 90km rail line linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport, as well as investment in the suburbs, better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other. Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) is the statutory body established to plan all elements of the project, procure builders, develop structure planning for SRL Precincts and oversee construction and the other changes that will help transform Melbourne and Victoria.

About the opportunity

  • Provide technically and commercially sound, solutions-based legal advice to the Head of Legal, Land &
    Infrastructure and other members of the Commercial &
    Legal division and the broader SRLA project teams in relation to all stages of project development and delivery, including on land, planning and environment (LPE), commercial, procurement and other legal matters.

  • Provide advice to SRLA teams and Head of Legal, Land &
    Infrastructure on project implementation issues, including matters relating to legislation, contracting, land, utilities and matters of public law.

  • Assist with LPE matters, including support and provision of advice to SRLA's Land, Planning and Environment Division and other stakeholders.

  • Develop and draft advice, briefs, contracts and procurement documentation to achieve desired outcomes within SRLA's budget and agreed timeframes.

  • Develop close, effective and open relationships with other SRLA divisions and other Government departments and agencies.

About you

  • Bachelor (or higher) qualification in Law

  • Admitted (or eligible to be admitted) to practice as a legal practitioner in Victoria or a similar jurisdiction in Australia and hold (or be eligible to apply for) a current practising certificate

  • Demonstrated experience in providing authoritative legal advice, including the review and drafting of complex project documentation in a government, major projects or land, planning and environment context

  • Exceptional comprehension and written communication skills, with the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner to senior levels of the organisation and key external stakeholders

  • Proven ability to be flexible, adaptable, collegiate and work collaboratively as a member of an energetic and busy team

  • Proven ability to work in sustained way and deliver results under pressure, managing competing priorities and views, incomplete or ambiguous information, and with limited supervision

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the proven ability to lead and guide internal and external stakeholders based on advanced expertise and build effective working relationships at all levels and demonstrable experience in influencing, negotiating and delivering positive outcomes

  • Demonstrated experience in managing strategic legal matters of significant scale and complexity, with a track record of well-developed and considered judgement and impeccable professional ethics and integrity
