About the Role

The Principal Engineer for Rail Control Systems is a key position within the Standards and Transport Engineering Branch (STE) of the Assets and Engineering Division (A&
E), reporting to the Senior Manager of Rail Engineering. This role also maintains a direct link to the Chief Engineer - Rail, and the Strategic Advisor for Signalling &
Operational Technology,who serves as DTP's key interface with the Strategic Signalling Taskforce (SST) within the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority (MTIA). This connection is essential for ensuring that our signalling strategies align with broader transportation initiatives.

Recently, DTP endorsed a signalling strategy aimed at steering renewal and investment decisions at the network and corridor levels. This strategy supports a shift from conventional signalling to advanced communications-based train control systems, facilitating an integrated transition to digital systems.

Position Outcomes

The Principal Engineer for Rail Control Systems will lead and develop the signalling and rail control technical requirements and standards for DTP, ensuring the successful implementation of this the asset strategy. The ideal candidate will have several years of leadership and management experience in a rail control systems environment and will provide advice and guidance to the Chief Engineer - Rail, other divisions within DTP, transport operators, and delivery agencies.

The Principal Engineer for Rail Control Systems will provide technical leadership and direction to the Rail Control Systems team. This includes developing and maintaining core network technical and maintenance requirements, as well as planning and coordinating technical activities to ensure compliance with DTP's standards. Additionally, this role involves guiding the technical development of signalling and rail control system asset class strategies to guide the future requirements of the Victorian Transport Network.

Moreover, the Principal Engineer will be responsible for investigating, analysing, and resolving technical issues as they arise. They will represent the Standards and Transport Engineering Branch (STE) in discussions with key internal and external stakeholders, including those at the national level. The role also entails writing concise and comprehensive reports to effectively communicate technical findings and recommendations.

Qualifications and role specific requirements

Mandatory

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in engineering or a similar field suitable for recognition
  • Leadership and Management experience in a rail control systems environment
