Principal Data Scientist

This position sits within Data Services that provides data services, statistical services and spatial (GIS) services to both internal and external clients. This position will head up the new Data Science team within Data Services. This role is pivotal in developing, evaluating, and implementing advanced ML/ Al models, driving innovation and technological advancements.

The Principal Data Scientist will be focused on transforming police data into actionable insights and tools that support frontline operations and decision-making. Through leadership and innovation, this role directly contributes to enhancing public safety, improving operational efficiencies, and fostering a culture of data-driven excellence within the Australian Police.

The core capability requirements for this role are:

• Oversee the development and implementation of AI and ML systems within the QPS environments.
• Plan and guide the development of tools to address complex challenges within law enforcement.
• Guide a team of Data Scientists, facilitating their needs and development.
• Provide expert advice on AI applications and guide policy documents relevant to AI ethics and best practices in law enforcement.
• Provide robust evaluation of AI solutions in all stages of development.
• Lead and contribute to projects from conceptualization to deployment, ensuring high standards of quality and effectiveness.

Role Requirements:

Qualification:

• Master's degree or higher qualification in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, or related fields.
  OR

Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience:

Highly Desirable:

• Proficiency in Python.
• A solid understanding of the current state of AI research and capabilities.
• Experience in end-to-end software development
• Experience leading a team in software development
• Proficiency With AWS &
  Cloud Computing
• A solid understanding of the current state of AI research and development.
