Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person-centred care. This position is available for unaccredited neurology trainees. Once you have received appropriate approval/acceptance into the neurology training program, an application can be made to ANZAN/RACP to accredit this position as non-core year towards your training.

The successful candidate will contribute to the neurology service by undertaking care of patients under the supervision of the neurologists in the department. Depending on the candidate's prior training and level of clinical experience in neurology, the non-core year could be structured for training and experience in one or more of the sub-speciality services (stroke, clinical neurophysiology (NCS/EMG), neuroimmunology, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, movement disorders) offered by the neurology department. Alternatively, the year could be structured for training and experience in general neurology. It is envisaged that there will be three to five outpatient clinics per week. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the out-of-hours on-call roster for neurology and stroke.

Along with the clinical duties, there are regular educational events and clinical meetings in which the registrar will be expected to participate The registrar will be encouraged to undertake research with a view to presenting the work at relevant scientific meeting(s).

DUTIES

Under limited direction of the Clinical Director, and under supervision of the neurology consultants, you will:

1. Participate in outpatient clinics under the supervision of consultant neurologists to provide a referral service for GPs and other medical practitioners and provide appropriate continuity of care for discharged patients.

2. Participate in after-hours neurology/ stroke on-call roster under consultant supervision.

3. Liaise with all members of the clinical team to maximise patient care and outcome.Promote high quality, customer service principles, practices and attributes.

4. Contribute to the education and training of all members of the clinical team. Regularly attend relevant departmental and interdepartmental meetings. Contribute to the clinical governance of the Unit by undertaking clinical audit, morbidity and mortality review and practising evidence-based medicine.

5. Actively participate in the training of both junior medical staff and medical students. Contribute to the teaching program of the ANU Medical School under the broad direction of the Head of Department in association with the Dean or delegate.

6. Undertake research in areas of medical interest related to the clinical practice or science of neurology.

7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

Full Registration as a medical practitioner with AHPRA.

Postgraduate year four, or above, and previous experience or training in a hospital-based internal medicine training program and/or neurology training program.

Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students.

Ideally, successful completion of the FRACP part 1 and part 2 examinations (or equivalent) and in the final years of advanced training for the fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) with the intention to obtain sub-speciality training/qualifications in neurology and/or stroke.

The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work.

Proficient computer literacy skills, as you will be responsible for completing clinical documentation in the DHR and using other CHS IT systems.

  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems;
    once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

WHAT YOU REQUIRE

These are the key selection criteria on which you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience:

1. Experience in the practice of general medicine and preferably in neurology, with at least one year of experience as a basic physician trainee in general medicine.

2. Completion of one or two years of advanced training in neurology would be required to be eligible for sub-speciality fellowship training.

2. Sound knowledge of evidence-based medical practice in Neurology.

3. High-level communication and interpersonal skills with a strong commitment to teaching at all levels (including medical, nursing and allied health professional staff).

4. An active interest in conducting research in a relevant area of clinical operational or scientific practice.

5. Demonstrated understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&
S) and the positive patient experience. Demonstrated behaviour consistent with CHS's values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
