About the National Measurement Institute The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government's national measurement authority. We play an important role in the Australian economy. NMI does this by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system.

About the Branch The Chemical and Biological Metrology Branch provides measurement standards such as certified reference materials, these include pure chemicals, gas standards, matrix materials and DNA standards. The branch also co-ordinates proficiency testing programs to assist laboratories assess their ongoing quality and performance. The branch houses three of Australia's national testing laboratories for anti-doping, forensic drugs and ultra-trace analysis. The branch delivers services across all of these fields and carries out research and development to enhance our capabilities in line with national and international requirements.
About the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory Branch The Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory (ASDTL), as part of the National Measurement Institute, is the only World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory conducting the testing of athlete samples in the Oceania region as well as conducting research in the field of human sports anti-doping. The ASDTL provides testing service to two key clients, Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) and Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ), as well as international sporting federation and anti-doping organisation.
The ASDTL is a dynamic team which undertake a wide range of tasks in tight timeframes, with competing deadlines and high expectations of the quality of finished products.
It is expected that our ideal candidate will be able to support and promote NMI's vision, mission and business objectives, by actively contributing to the ASDTL's team goals, strategies and work plans while achieving quality outcomes and adhering to documented procedures.
The position will be based in North Ryde, Sydney at the National Measurement Institute.

Our ideal candidate Our ideal candidate has:

  • Demonstrated extensive experience in the development of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), particularly as it relates to sports drug testing.
  • Extensive experience in database development and management as it relates to WADA's reporting online database Anti-Doping Administration and Management System (ADAMS)
  • Demonstrated experience in computer applications relating to data manipulation and laboratory data systems.
  • Experience with scientific laboratory processes and the Quality Assurance and Quality Systems principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively and effectively in a team environment in accordance with equity provisions.
  • Well-developed skills in effectively communicating with stakeholders of all levels, including colleagues, senior management and external clients.
  • Ability to prepare procedural documents and willingness to present information to staff within ASDTL
  • In accordance with equity provisions and participative work practices, the ability to work with only minimal guidance to help establish and maintain projects and provide ideas to help achieve organisational goals.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and ability to work productively in a team and independently to ensure smooth workflow for the team

What you will do The successful candidate will be responsible for the developing and managing Laboratory Information Management System and supporting laboratory ICT requirements.
As a LIMS and Database Manager you will:

  • Develop and implement effective solutions relating to ASDTL's LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)'s online reporting database Anti-Doping Administration and Management System (ADAMS).
  • Develop innovative processes to improve LIMS and implement rapid solutions to adapt to changing requirements of laboratory in line with WADA technical documents and ADAMS NextGen reporting requirements
  • Work with ASDTL subject matter experts (SME) and vendor to configure and customise LIMS system to accommodate laboratory requirements
  • Ability to assess requirements and configure new functionality
  • Manage databases under the direction of the Operations Manager to ensure optimal workflow systems
  • Perform end-to-end testing as required
  • Provide training and support to LIMS users
  • Manage backups of instrument data and system images of instrument PCs
  • Coordinate administration and technical activities within the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory for the Sydney Athlete Passport Management Unit (Sydney APMU) as it relates to the timely review and management of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP).
  • Liaise with other internal or external professionals to resolve assessments, complete assessment or make referrals
  • Assist with and draft the preparation of procedural or technical manuals and guidelines for use within ASDTL
  • Travel to domestic and overseas conferences, meetings or symposium as required

Eligibility A Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised university.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.
Th is position require s a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Notes A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing APS6 Science and Technical stream vacancies, should they become available within 18 months from the date advertised.
The laboratory offers flexible working arrangements but during major sporting events there is an expectation for all staff to work shifts and on weekends or public holidays.
