Job Description

An excellent opportunity is available for a Laboratory Head to provide leadership and focus for RNA Biology at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) seeks an exceptional scientist to lead a research program in the field of RNA biology, with a focus on fundamental and translational aspects. The successful candidate will join WEHI's Epigenetics and Development Division, a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that combines experimental and computational approaches to advance understanding of gene regulation and its role in development, health and disease.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a cutting-edge research program in RNA biology, investigating fundamental mechanisms and exploring translational applications.

  • Develop and maintain an externally funded research portfolio through competitive grant applications, philanthropy and industry collaborations.

  • Provide strategic leadership for WEHI in the area of RNA biology.

  • Contribute to the teaching and mentoring activities by supervising postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

  • Actively participate in the Institute's academic and research community, fostering collaborations and contributing to seminars, workshops, and scholarly activities.

  • Disseminate research findings through high-impact publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.

  • Represent the Institute at national and international conferences and events, enhancing its reputation and visibility.

Selection Criteria
Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • An international reputation for discovery in the field of RNA biology

  • Deep knowledge and hands-on experience in various areas of RNA biology, such as transcription regulation, RNA processing (splicing, editing, modification), RNA transport, RNA stability and degradation mechanisms, non-coding RNAs (e.G., miRNAs, lncRNAs), and RNA-protein interactions.

  • Proficiency in a wide range of techniques and methodologies used in RNA biology research, including but not limited to:

    • Next-generation sequencing (RNA-seq, CLIP-seq, etc.)

    • Bioinformatics and computational analysis of RNA data

    • RNA interference (RNAi) and CRISPR-based approaches

    • In vitro and in vivo functional assays

    • Single-molecule and live-cell imaging techniques

  • Experience in studying RNA biology in the context of specific biological processes, such as gene expression regulation, development, stem cell biology, neurobiology, or disease models (e.G., cancer, neurological disorders, infectious diseases).

  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and cutting-edge approaches in RNA biology, such as RNA therapeutics, RNA delivery systems, and RNA-based diagnostics and biosensors.

  • Familiarity with translational aspects of RNA biology research, including the potential for developing novel therapeutic strategies, diagnostic tools, or biotechnological applications based on RNA biology principles.

Terms of appointment
This position is available for 7 years Maximum Term in a full-time capacity. Salary is Research Employee Level C to Level E ($139 903) dependent on experience.
