How you'll make a difference:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Workforce Strategy and Planning, the Director, Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health will play a critical leadership role in overseeing the delivery of high-quality strategic advice on the critical issues affecting the future of the health workforce, focusing on high value initiatives that will strengthen the health system and drive improvements in quality and safety. The role will identify emerging workforce issues and trends, bring together evidence and research, maintain strong relationships with key workforce partners, develop strategic policy options to address emerging issues and wider government reform priorities, and plan and deliver specific policy initiatives, such as legislative change or other election commitments to address workforce risks and challenges.

Suitable applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Develop and deliver strategy and planning for the department including measures and reporting.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of policy and strategy work relating to health workforces.
  • Develop and manage relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders across the health sector and government. These include clinical leaders, professional bodies (e.G. Medical Colleges), industrial bodies and community representatives, as well as representatives from other portfolio departments, central agencies and the Commonwealth.
  • Maintain good awareness of the current political and government context and effectively liaise with Minister's advisors, media and communications teams and senior executives including the Secretary through timely, timely, objective and impartial advice.
  • Identify emerging issues and areas of risk across the health portfolio based on sound analysis of underlying system pressures, consultation with internal and external stakeholders and develop appropriate responses. Examples of work might include advice to Ministers on opportunities for new models to better support integrated health care, opportunities to strengthen the resource pipeline and solutions to respond to challenges in rural areas including through the creation of new roles or training pathways. These responses may need Cabinet approval or require public consultation.
  • Builds and coaches team members to uplift the strategic skills and to grow workforce strategy capability;
    aligns team with the organisational values and goals through effective people management and modelling, maximises effectiveness by selecting, developing, managing and motivating a high performing team, clearly defines role expectations, monitors performance, provides timely and constructive feedback and facilitates employee development, ensures staff are effectively deployed through effective workforce planning practices
  • Generates new ideas;
    draws on a range of information sources to identify new ways of doing things;
    actively influences events and promotes ideas;
    translates creative ideas into workplace improvements;
    reflects on experience and is open to new ways to improve practice
  • Proven expertise in developing policy responses in the health sector.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the key issues impacting the management and delivery of public services would be expected. Knowledge across the areas of community, health or welfare sectors would be advantageous.
