We have two exciting temporary opportunities in Civil and Regulatory Law Branch, Justice, and Community Safety Directorate for a Director (SOG B) position in the Liquor, Racing and Gaming team and a Director /Manager (SOG B) position in the Human Rights and Social Policy team.

The Civil Law and Regulatory Branch develops and implements policy, legislation and programs relating to general civil law;
administrative law;
access to justice;
legal assistance;
courts and tribunals;
citizens' rights and consumer protection;
residential tenancies;
defamation;
human rights;
discrimination;
privacy;
courts and tribunals;
retirement villages;
commercial law;
property;
liquor, racing and gaming policy and a range of regulatory matters.

The Human Rights and Social Policy team is responsible for a broad range of social policy including human rights and discrimination legislation, official visitors, births deaths and marriages registration;
privacy law, guardianship, supported decision making and preventing elder abuse. The team is also responsible for scrutinising and assessing all government bills for compatibility with the Human Rights Act. Supervision of staff may also be required in this role.

The Liquor, Racing and Gaming team is responsible for providing policy advice and developing legislation in relation to the regulation of liquor, racing and gaming in the ACT. This includes supporting the Government's regulatory and harm reduction initiatives and the delivery of gaming related commitments made under the Parliamentary and Governing Agreement of the 10th Assembly. The team works closely with Access Canberra, as the regulator, the community and industry stakeholders to formulate policy and legislation advice to Government and to develop and implement initiatives.

Directors are responsible for developing and delivering sound policy initiatives to achieve the ACT Government's objectives. The Director will need to be highly organised, engage critically with challenging and complex legal policy issues, possess high attention to detail, be a strong team player, and be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders across government, the community sector and industry. The Director will need excellent analytical and research skills in relation to policy and legislation.

Eligibility/Other requirements:
Relevant tertiary qualifications in law, economics or a related field or significant study towards gaining qualifications are highly desirable.

Notes:

  • The temporary position in Liquor Racing and Gaming is available immediately for a period of 6 months with the possibility of extension up to 10 months.
  • The temporary position in Human Right and Social Policy is available from August 2024 for a period of 12 month.
  • The successful applicant may be selected based on written application and referee reports only.
  • A merit pool will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future Director vacancies over the next 12 months.
