Reporting directly to the Project Director for our CopperString project, you will be entrusted with comprehensive oversight of our CopperString 2032 project, from detailed planning to completion.

Across the multidisciplinary project team you will influence, coordinate and ensure the effective functioning of each work stream including commercial, engineering, procurement, safety, environment, workforce and quality, promoting collaboration and synergy among team members.

Primarily operating out of our Bowen Hills office you will form a strong relationship with our contracting partners, applying your expert skills of negotiation and influence to develop collaborative solution focussed outcomes.

What is CopperString 2032?

The largest ever economic development project in North and North West Queensland and the largest ever major project for Powerlink Queensland.

The CopperString 2032 project initially involves building 840km of new electricity transmission line from just south of Townsville in the Burdekin region to Mount Isa that will connect Queensland's North West Minerals Province to the National Electricity Market for the first time in Australia's history. Around 200km of additional transmission line will be required to connect new renewable generators to CopperString.

The overall expanded project has a budget of $5 billion and includes:

  • 500kV transmission line from just south of Townsville to Hughenden
  • 330kV transmission line from Hughenden to Cloncurry
  • 220kV transmission line from Cloncurry to Mount Isa
  • Up to six new substation sites
  • Workforce accommodation and facilities in strategic locations along the corridor.


CopperString 2032 includes an increased transmission capacity of 500kV (from 330kV) for the section of line from just south of Townsville to Hughenden to unlock Queensland's renewable superpower - the Flinders Renewable Energy Zone. This zone has the potential to be one of the largest renewable energy zones in Australia.

Your expertise

The ideal candidate for this position will showcase a rich and proven background in the development and delivery of major linear infrastructure program and project management. You will be able to demonstrate comprehensive expertise across all facets of major projects delivery methodology, implementation, project controls, and meticulous reporting and evaluation processes aimed at consistently delivering high-quality outcomes.

Demonstrated leadership in major projects or portfolio management is crucial, highlighting an ability to navigate complexities and lead project delivery teams to success. This role calls for someone with extensive senior project leadership experience and a demonstrated track record of guiding high-performing teams towards achieving remarkable results.

Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, are a must-this individual should possess a natural ability to engage effectively, exude high energy, maintain a positive and inspiring demeanour, and remain focused on achieving efficient and commercial viable project outcomes while articulating and meeting expectations.

Moreover, experience in producing a range of strategic and operational documents as required, including briefing papers, discussion papers, reports, submissions and responses to information requests, delivering impactful presentations, and facilitating productive consultations is highly valued for this role.

With demonstrated industry experience (linear major infrastructure experience preferred), you will also possess:

  • Degree level qualifications in Electrical and Civil Engineering or a related discipline with significant experience;
    or a lesser qualification if coupled with extensive project management experience in the relevant field.
  • Strong experience in leadership roles, with coordination of multi-disciplinary teams and management and mentoring of technical experts and managers at scale.
  • Extensive, demonstrable experience supporting in the delivery of complex projects, preferably in the infrastructure/energy sector.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder experience working across a range of people and teams on infrastructure projects to effectively deliver the desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business strategy into operational plans, ensuring that planning demonstrates measurable, cost-effective delivery of key outcomes, resource planning and clear alignment to strategic goals.
