Since 1827, the Australian Museum has housed one of the nation's preeminent scientific research collections, furthering education for generations of Australians, and establishing an internationally recognized reputation. The Museum's Lizard Island Research Station (LIRS) in Far North Queensland, established in 1973 as part of the Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI), conducts leading-edge research into the ecology of the Great Barrier Reef. Supporting around 100 projects per year, the LIRS enables critical research on this complex and vulnerable natural ecosystem.

Presently the Museum is seeking to appoint two full-time, ongoing Co-Directors (Scientific Officer 4) of the LIRS to be based on the island, with responsibility for the station's research and education activities, along with its sustainable, environmentally sensitive, and cost-effective day-to-day operations and future development.

Reporting to the Chief Scientist and Director (AMRI), these roles comprise an exciting and challenging opportunity for two capable individuals to lead an established, world-class research station, making significant contributions to the scientific understanding and knowledge of Earth's largest living structure. The successful candidates will possess robust and durable scientific, leadership, and relevant operational skills and stakeholder knowledge, enabling them to take on a broad range of responsibilities to ensure the continued success of the Station. This will be an opportunity to oversee the creation of world-class scholarship on a wide and diverse range of challenges facing tropical marine science in Australia. From strategic planning, through to financial management, facilities maintenance, and occupational health and safety, these are unique and hands-on professional opportunities, situated at the heart of a pristine and treasured natural environment.
