The Office of the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage (OGBR&
WH), located within the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation, is responsible for coordinating the Queensland Government's Reef strategies and programs to drive improved accountability for Reef health outcomes. As part of its role, the OGBR&
WH is responsible for coordinating implementation of a range of actions and programs, including:
- The Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.
- Progress on Great Barrier Reef election commitments.
- The Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan.
- The Queensland Reef Water Quality Program;
and
- The Reef Assist Program.
The Chief Scientific Officer is responsible for providing expert advice, professional and scientific leadership to support the development of environmental strategy, planning and policy. The role provide high level scientific advice.

The Chief Scientific Officer is responsible for providing expert advice, professional and scientific leadership to support the development of environmental strategy, planning and policy for the Great Barrier Reef. The role provides high level scientific advice on sensitive, complex and high-level assessments on issues affecting Queensland.

As the Chief Scientific Officer (PO6) you will:
- Lead and manage the coordination of contemporary scientific knowledge and tools into waterway and water quality management decision making through both statutory and non-statutory planning mechanisms. Lead and manage the coordination of initiatives and products and services that relate to the role of the department in both the statutory and non-statutory water planning frameworks.
- Lead the investigation of complex water issues and establish planning strategies, decision support systems and administrative mechanisms to optimise the achievement of sustainability outcomes through the planning system.
- Provide professional and scientific leadership and specialist technical advice in the development of environmental policy, planning and strategy relating to aquatic ecosystem and water quality assessment and associated technologies and information systems.
- Develop and maintain close working relationships and networks with staff from other agencies, organisations and research institutions.
- Identify and initiate opportunities to liaise with internal and external stakeholders in order to influence government agencies, regional NRM bodies and local government to introduce ecologically sustainable water development and planning.
- Represent the department in consultations and negotiations with national and state committees, research institutions, regional NRM bodies, community interest groups, industry, Federal, State and Local government agencies on a wide array of water planning issues.
- Critically review and evaluate submissions and reports from the Commonwealth, other jurisdictions and external consultants to develop policy options and
recommendations for consideration of the Director-General and the Minister.
- Prepare and review Ministerial, Cabinet and other correspondence, reports and briefings.
- Negotiate, coordinate and collaborate to put in place resourcing arrangements (financial, project staff, contracts and partnerships) to achieve business outcomes and seek senior management endorsement as required.
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
