ABOUT THE POSITION
Senator O'Neill is seeking an experienced, dedicated professional to join her team as Chief of Staff.

The Chief of Staff provides strategic, campaign and policy advice, coordinates priority campaigns, and manages an electorate office team working across Erina and Canberra offices.


The key objective of this role is to manage a team of policy, media, and administrative employees to execute the political and community objectives of Senator O'Neill.

KEY DUTIES

  • Management of the Electorate office in Erina and Parliament House office in Canberra including staffing, budgets, and coordination of activities of the office.
  • Devise, implement and manage campaign, political and media strategies.
  • Oversight of Senate Chamber processes in sitting weeks, including managing the Senator's diary, Chair duties, Committee and Estimates process
  • Delegation and occasional execution of tasks including preparation of talking points, speeches, policy briefs and media briefs.
  • Travelling to Canberra for sitting weeks and other regional travel as required
  • Engagement with external stakeholders, constituents, and ministerial offices to determine appropriate policy objectives.
  • Other duties as required.


KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
This position would suit a highly motivated person, who has initiative, a willingness to learn, can take direction and who possesses the following skills and experience:

  • A deep understanding of Australia's system of government and parliamentary processes.
  • Minimum 25 years' experience working in politics or a similar environment.
  • The capacity to undertake extensive travel accompanying the Senator both within New South Wales and interstate.
  • Excellent research and communication skills.
  • Relevant professional experience and/or a tertiary qualification in political science, international relations, law, or a similar field.
  • Experience with policy, research and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to lead and work as part of a small team, under time constraints and strict deadlines, whilst being proactively motivated to work independently at times, with excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Willingness and capacity to work irregular hours (nights, early mornings and weekends) as required.
  • Willingness and capacity to travel as required.
  • A commitment to support the Senator's values and work will be required.


EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement which include:

  • A commencing salary between $79,287 and $89,310 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills
  • An additional optional allowance may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable
