Chief Executive Officer, Australian College of Nursing

The Australian College of Nursing is a peak body and leader of the nursing profession committed to the mission of Shaping Health, Advancing Nursing. The College plays a key role in supporting nurses and nursing through policy and advocacy of behalf of the profession.

The ACN is the Australian member of the International Council of Nurses headquartered in Geneva in collaboration with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF).

THE ROLE

The ACN is seeking applications from highly experienced, executive level leaders to fill the role of Chief Executive (CE).

Reporting to the Board, the successful applicant will be responsible for driving ACN's vision and implementing the organisation's strategic, operational and performance objectives across six pillars:
Education, Community, Advocacy, Leadership, Social Impact and Policy.

THE CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be strategic and demonstrate system level thinking, enabling them to further strengthen ACN's position as a leader in the nursing profession.

They must also have exceptional advocacy, communication and presentation skills, be highly collaborative and have proven capability in influencing key stakeholders. They will be seen as a credible advocate for the nursing profession, and those we partner with, for the benefit of both Australian and global communities.

Sound judgement, integrity, and informed decision-making are essential, along with high-level interpersonal skills in building relationships with local, national, and international partners.

Previous experience in leading a member-based or for purpose organisation will be seen as advantageous as will driving innovation to enhance member engagement, organisational growth and development and funding.

Selection Criteria

Candidates interested in the role will be asked to respond to the following selection criteria:

  • Advocacy and Public Affairs - Excellent advocacy and campaign instincts with the ability to develop and execute strategic policy, engagement, communications, and media strategy to support the strategic vision and purpose of the ACN.
  • Inter-Governmental Relations and Policy Influence - exposure and understanding of health systems and the role of the nursing profession in reform, best practice, and innovation. A reputable voice in policy development processes relevant to health care delivery and specifically the role of nursing.
  • System Thinking and Thought Leadership - An ability to support and continuously focus on a forward agenda in support of the vision and purpose of the ACN. Strength in conceptual thinking, with an ability to conceptualise issues and themes and respond and lead the nursing profession and organisation accordingly.
  • Business Acumen and People Leadership -Experience in building, coaching, and leading teams and driving organisation growth and change.
  • Networking, stakeholder relations and communication - Able to seek out, nurture and develop the right relationships to assist the organisation in its mission and growth agenda. Ability to represent the organisation effectively with stakeholders, and across levels of government.
  • Qualifications - A Registered Nurse with current or eligible AHPRA registration with no conditions and hold relevant tertiary qualifications, at a minimum of a Master's level. PhD qualifications desirable but not essential.
  • Experience - Demonstrated experience as a reflective and inclusive senior executive with strong communication, negotiation, problem-solving, consultation and analytical skills together with a proven track record of success in leading complex organisations, particularly in the healthcare and higher education sectors.
