The Role

As Chief Counsel / First Assistant Secretary of the Workplace Relations Legal Division, you will lead a team responsible for providing legal advice to Government on workplace relations, work health and safety, and workers' compensation matters;
supporting the development of legislative reform;
and management of workplace relations litigation involving the Minister responsible for Workplace Relations.

The Chief Counsel, along with the Workplace Relations Legal Division, will work closely with the three
policy divisions in the Workplace Relations Group throughout the design process of legislative policy
matters, to ensure an integrated approach to reforms across the Workplace Relations Group.
Capabilities
We are seeking individuals with the following skills and capabilities:

  • demonstrable record of achievement in leading teams to deliver outcomes and a proven ability to balance multiple competing priorities.

- ability to think strategically, work collaboratively to implement government priorities in a complex, challenging and time critical environment.
- excellent understanding of Australia's workplace relations framework or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
- excellent representational and relationship management skills, sound judgement, drive and initiative.
Qualifications and Education

  • Law degree from an Australian tertiary institution or a comparable overseas qualification.
  • Admitted as a practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.
