About the Role
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education (SoSSMFE), the Director will lead the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies (CTMT), a renowned international research center focused on the impact of new media technologies on art, culture, industry, and human experience. Established in 2019, CTMT aims to elevate the contributions made by arts, humanities, and social sciences in driving technological innovation. The Director will oversee research staff and students, fostering growth and excellence through the development of national and international opportunities.
The successful incumbent will:

  • Provide strategic leadership to CTMT, aligning research activities with the centre's vision.
  • Act as a liaison between CTMT, Swinburne University research institutes, School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education departments and research centres and other Schools.
  • Drive high-quality research outputs and secure external funding from national and international sources.
  • Support senior staff and mentor mid-career and early career researchers.

The Centre for Transformative Media Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology is at the forefront of research in three key themes:
Arts 4.0, Techmedia Culture, and Digital Cultural Heritage. These themes drive innovative research and exploration within the Centre, with opportunities to introduce new areas of research aligned with Swinburne's vision. CTMT being regarded as core to the university's mission is evident through current building and capital works investment, including new Motion Capture and Volumetric Capture facilities, as well as co-robotics facilities set to be completed at the Hawthorn campus by the end of 2024.
The Centre supports and generates strong interdisciplinary collaborations, both internal and external, and is committed to fostering diverse perspectives and expertise. With a robust affiliate membership structure that spans all departments within the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education, CTMT serves as a vital hub for interdisciplinary research and collaboration across a large and diverse academic community.

About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and manage multidisciplinary research projects and teams in the field of creative arts and practice-based research.
  • An outstanding and internationally significant track record of research in arts, humanities and technology as evidenced by a range of high-quality publications and/or NTROs.
  • Demonstration of a significant track record in attracting external research income through competitive grants and/or industry collaboration.
  • Demonstrated competence in attracting and supervising higher degree research students.
  • Demonstrated links with relevant industries, organisations and research communities and demonstrated competence in working with relevant professions in industry and government.

Qualifications

  • An earned doctoral qualification in the arts in an area relevant to new and emerging media technologies.
