About the Role

The Honourable Justice Emerton, President of the Court of Appeal, is seeking a legally qualified individual to be her associate with an anticipated commencement date in late July 2024. The President sits on criminal and civil appeals, and has responsibility for ensuring the efficient conduct of the work of the CoA. The President's associates assist in the discharge of her Honour's judicial and administrative responsibilities. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in civil and criminal appellate matters in the CoA.

Duties are detailed in the attached position description but specifically include:

  • assisting in the management and coordination of the Judge's judicial and administrative responsibilities;
  • leadership and training for other CoA associates;
  • initiate, develop and implement improvements to Court policies and processes;
  • preparing research memoranda, case summaries, and assisting in the production of judgments, proofreading and editing;
  • clerking in court, using courtroom technology to ensure proceedings are transcribed and technological aids are readily available to counsel;
  • performing administrative tasks, including maintaining Court records and preparing material for use by the Judge in Court;
  • helping to manage the Judge's chambers;
    and
  • liaising with Court staff, the public, government and the profession;
  • accompanying the Judge to circuit courts in regional Victoria, as and when required;
    and
  • assisting the President to prepare for, and accompany the President to external events including drafting speeches, panel discussions and meetings.

About You

The successful applicant will be admitted to legal practice, and subsequent employment experience is desirable.

Excellent research and writing skills and strong academic credentials are essential. One or more of:
experience on the editorial committee of a university law journal;
research work for an academic;
and/or a higher degree in law, are preferred.

To be successful in the role, you will possess the following:

  • demonstrated ability in legal research and writing, and statutory interpretation;
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism;
  • well-developed proofreading skills;
    and
  • an excellent academic record.

The role requires a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism. as you will be working closely with Judges, court staff, legal practitioners, and members of the public.
