The role sits in the Data Capability Exchange (DCx) section in the Enterprise Transformation Group (ETG). The ETG is made up of two Divisions, the Chief Information Officer Division (CIOD) and the Enterprise Strategy and Transformation Division (ESTD), that have been established to drive the AEC's transformation agenda, and to deliver the Election Systems Modernisation Program (Indigo Program) on behalf of the agency.
The DCx team are a collaborative and driven team of professionals focused on the development and implementation of the data and information management framework, systems, strategy and policies. We actively engage with our business areas to support their business needs and improve the level of information management and data maturity across the AEC.

The key duties of the position include
The Assistant Director, Data Governance and Policy will manage the day-to-day data governance activities and will have responsibility for improving the quality of data and information assets. The position will help establish an enterprise data governance framework for data policies, standards and practices, to meet overall business needs.
The role serves as a point of escalation for governance, data quality and security issues and works closely with stakeholders to improve the quality and value of core data assets and helps set the strategic requirements of the agency in relation to federal government regulatory requirements. The role is responsible for undertaking very complex and/or sensitive work, under broad direction, using expertise in data governance and policy.
To excel you'll have:

  • Extensive experience in a similar role, and a demonstrated understanding of the role and duties performed as a subject matter expert in data governance.
  • Proven understanding of relevant legislation, standards and best practice for data governance and policy how they relate to one another and the ability to advise others in the agency.
  • Ability to advocate for and explain data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data protection.
  • Experience in successfully managing and delivering results within time restraints and legislative and budget parameters and with competing priorities.
  • Proven conceptual and analytical abilities with sound knowledge of change management practices and techniques to enable innovation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff while developing capabilities, encouraging career development and embedding professionalism.
