The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced commercial Legal Counsel to join the ERM Legal Group.

This new role will provide legal, contracts and governance support to ERM's operations in the APAC region helping ERM's Legal Group to achieve its overall mission of reducing ERM's risk profile, improving decision-making and enhancing client relations. The role will cover a wide range of legal and compliance issues, covering countries located across APAC.

This is a fast paced, commercially focused and highly collaborative environment, working with ERM business units, clients, service providers and external legal counsel in over 40 country locations. You will act as a trusted legal adviser to colleagues throughout the business units at various levels of seniority. You will report to the Regional Managing Counsel for APAC, based in Perth, Australia.

The role will ideally be located accessible to Perth (where most of the APAC legal team is currently based) although we may consider other locations aligned with ERM's business needs and in similar time zones to Perth.

Responsibilities:

With your expertise and knowledge, you will provide legal support and advice to the ERM business in various countries located in the APAC region, including:

  • providing legal support to the ERM Groups' operations in APAC
  • assisting the legal team to achieve its contributions towards reducing ERM's risk profile, improving decision-making and enhancing client relations
  • providing prompt and efficient advice and drafting in respect of a broad range of agreements, including professional services contracts, framework agreements, subcontracts, reliance letters, confidentiality agreements and secondment agreements
  • supporting compliance with ERM corporate governance, policies and procedures
  • offering risk management advice to ERM staff at all levels of the business
  • providing support on the integration of newly acquired businesses
  • supporting the other members of the APAC Legal Team on special projects
  • managing external counsel in various APAC jurisdictions
  • providing practical, hands-on legal advice to business partners on a broad range of commercial, legal, regulatory and compliance risks
  • supporting other business enablement functions

This role includes a significant component of contract reviews, drafting and advice. It would be ideal for an experienced commercial contracts lawyer looking to join a multi-national commercial in-house team in a business-facing role, providing end-to-end service with a wide variety of work and responsibilities.

Within a busy team and mutually supportive environment, you will enjoy high value work across the business.

What you'll need:

  • a current legal practice certificate, with relevant post-qualification legal experience
  • experience in an international or top tier law firm (preferably in the UK or Australia), or worked for at least 3 years as part of an in-house legal team (ideally in a professional services environment)
  • a well-developed understanding of commercial, contract and risk management issues (including a good understanding of compliance issues) facing a global business
  • demonstrable experience delivering legal support to a wide variety of technical staff
  • be approachable, adaptable, proactive and pragmatic
  • the ability to work as part of a team, whilst also being able to work independently and with initiative
  • a focus on prioritizing good client relations and sensitivity to cultural differences presented by ERM's operations
  • professionalism, calmness under pressure, excellent organizational skills, tolerance, and the ability to grasp concepts quickly and to meet challenging deadlines
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail
  • strong stills in legal drafting with an emphasis on plain and clear language principles
  • fluency in spoken and written English (fluency in another language relevant to the region would be viewed favourably)
  • a willingness to build relationships of mutual trust with APAC senior management and partners

This job is a good fit for you if:

  • you are an excellent communicator with proven technical and organisational skills, with the ability to be open and candid whilst demonstrating respect for others and cultivating a culture of inclusion and trust
  • you are accustomed to working under pressure to meet challenging deadlines and be able to thrive in a fast-paced, complex and rapidly changing environment, adapting to different business needs (operational, transactional and structural) in the context of a large global group
  • you have an eye for detail and are meticulous in your work, but are also willing to work as part of a team engaging with and supporting colleagues to create well-considered and pragmatic, risk-based approaches to problems and enhanced team contribution
  • you display sound, thoughtful business judgement and thinking, with a balanced commitment to process and continuous improvement and a demonstrated ability to earn the confidence of senior executives as a trusted advisor
  • you have the ability to build strong and lasting relationships with internal clients, offer pragmatic and sensible advice and show a genuine commitment to their business needs.
  • are dedicated and enthusiastic, have the ability to work efficiently with a commitment to good outcomes for ERM and a willingness to get involved wherever there is a need.
